If you’re interested in the concept of low art miles, you should check out Early Work Gallery in South Fremantle. Once the home of Spice magazine (a foodie mag that revered all things local) it’s settled into its latest incarnation in recent months as a permanent gallery for local artists. The artists aren’t just ‘local’ in a vague sense. They’re really very local in that they all reside within 1 kilometre of the gallery.

Hangdog is delighted to be among them, basking in the esteemed company of Ken Wadrop (atmospheric landscapes and people – you’ll see him painting in the corner of the gallery sometimes) and Roger Swainston (colourful, intricate fish). You may have seen one of us delivering artworks via push bike or on foot or on the back of our shared yak. No freight carriers around here. I’m also pretty confident that no dogs or fish were harmed in the making of this intimate, light and very happy little gallery space.

Early Work is at the Biscuit Factory, Shop 9, 330 South Terrace, South Fremantle. Phone 0412 583 656. Opening hours Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm.
